The Liberty Tree

Lyrics and Music by Mike Darnell © 2003

It was standing tall with a mighty girth
It was standing there at our nation’s birth
And for those who gathered underneath the boughs
Words of freedom rang true in solemn vows

One of thirteen trees sharing freedom’s path
It out lived the rest with a storied past
Through the test of time and four hundred years
Through the pains of war and a nation’s tears

Oh, The Liberty Tree, rally ‘round
Oh, The Liberty Tree, can you hear that sound?
Of the battle cries and of the men that died
To let the bells of freedom ring

When at last it fell and the tree came down
With a reverent sound it did hit the ground
But the splintered wood showed of such decay
“It’s just firewood”, some were heard to say

But it’s from that wood this guitar was made
Part of history and a luthier’s trade
And the strings ring loud and the sound is clear
This is Liberty and for everyone to hear

Oh, The Liberty Tree, rally ‘round
Oh, The Liberty Tree, can you hear that sound?
Of the battle cries and of the men that died
To let the bells of freedom ring

Oh, The Liberty Tree, rally ‘round
Oh, The Liberty Tree, can you hear that sound?
Of the battle cries and of the men that died
To let the bells of freedom ring
To let the bells of freedom ring
